How long can you keep a used roll of film before you get it developed?

Films contain a fragile gelatin emulsion that is very susceptible to oxidation and decay from the moment you purchase and remove the plastic packaging. It’s affected not just by light but also by temperature. If not stored in a cool, dry environment, film may suffer significant degradation within days after exposure. The amount of degradation varies by the type of film, what/how it was exposed, and the external environment conditions it was stored under. There are many instances where previously exposed but unprocessed film sat for years before finally being processed and yet yielded acceptable results, but these films still suffered some amount of degradation.
